Y-up vs. Z-up part orientation - Thoughts?

This is how the axis are related to vehicles. This also follows the Right Hand Rule.

If you stand in the middle of the front of the vehicle .. hold out your right hand .. your thumb pointing up. your index finger pointing to the rear of the vehicle, and your middle finger point to the passenger side of the vehicle, then all of those three fingers are pointing in the positive direction of the axis.

Maybe SolidWorks should have never added a XYZ triad. Before that ,no one knew or cared which way Z up was. We never model a part based on manufacturing direction, instead we model based on the Front/Top/Side of the products orientation so they are closer to correction orientation when inserting into assemblies so less fuss. Of course not all parts fit neatly into that default orientation.

So should it be from inside the car looking forward, or in front of the car looking toward the car?

If you are sitting in the drivers seat. Then you need to use the Left hand rule.

Where your thumb points up for Z positive

Your Index finger points towards the passenger seat for Y positive

Your middle finger points towards the rear of the vehicle to X positive.

Middle finger should point up all the time …

There would the F-Up …

I should start using F-Up coordinate …

Only at certain people

All people some of the time.

Some people all of the time.

The machinists take my designs and programs and change them to the F-up out in the shop…

OH YOU WISCONSIN GUYS  :clinking_beer_mugs:
