so i basically have to design an integrated(solid) key onto a shaft, but have no idea how can i extrude the solid key until the wider bottom part/edge, which also happens to be rounded - if i just draw the key lines on the thinner shaft and extrude that, it will only do it in a square form for some reason, but i need the key to end as the same shape as the bottom part of the detail…
i probably cant even remember if i extruded the key part from a draft, but what i do remember is that it did not come out as rounded shape… and most certainly did not even snap to the edge of the bottom part…
so is there a piece somewhere that would have the most common design features laid out in a step-by-step tutorial somewhere?
its basically a rounded shaft, with a wider area in the bottom like this:
||-------
so i would need to add a small key/extrusion to the “-------” part/shaft, which would end at the same width as the wider bottom part
even the lawn mowers and grass trimmers basically have that key on the shaft that keeps the attachments from rotating, but i need the key to be solid/integrated, aka non-removable
Welcome to the forum. I also don’t understand exactly what you’re referring to (you need to click on the “Full Editor & Preview” box below the Reply text box to post pictures), but it’s likely you need a Revolve instead of an Extrude.
ok, i basically even need 2 different shapes then:
1st is the key coming out from the shaft and the 2nd thing is the oval shape in the bottom - are there any tutorials about these most common details somewhere or can someone make 1? (maybe add some pattern repetitions also to it then)
i cant even remember how did i manage to design the oval shape(which also needs holes tilted at the same angle as the oval shape actually!), but the key part i didnt even manage to figure out lol
Maybe we need a base line. Are you new to Solid Edge or new to solid modeling all together?
Note, keys are implemented by cutting the keyway vs leaving a key standing proud for simpler machining. Unless perhaps its injection molded part or something.
probably would do, but the hole should be constant size and the key part should extrude outwards from the middle shaft, until the rounded edge of the lower/wider ring in the bottom (and should touch the ring too, not be in the middle of the shaft).
but how do you even make the lower oval part like that :x (and cut a hole into it)
If you can draw a 2d section view version of it I can model it up for you.
But general rule .. if its round its convenient to use revolve in other cases normal extrude.
i cant open that file tho… but can you make a video of the whole process? windows 10 probably even has a built-in screen recorder somewhwere in the start menu…
(and the key has to be only on 1 side, not revolving around the whole shaft)
ok thanks, thats pretty neat, but they key part should be exactly like it was at 02:19 - and just touch the edge of the middle ring below it and end with the same shape too, aka follow the rounded edge of the middle ring
