Solid works Custom Properties and slow loading of the indented BOM

Hi

My part and assembly files have around 16 custom properties to help with purchasing and loading into the ERP system they would like to add another 2 properties which are category code and Category Description.

The issue I am having it my final assemblies contains minimum of 2000 Components( this broken down into subassemblies ) and the parts and assemblies are on the shared drive.

This cause the indented BOM causes Solid Works to run slow.

There are also Legacy parts that don’t have the properties and need them adding in and the properties have being loaded into configurations and not the default properties.

This would be easy to sort out if Solid Works had Solid Edge Design Manager which would open the Bom with all the categories and you could add new properties to old arts in bulk and update the properties with out have to open each part and edit the properties.

I am wondering if adding more properties will make the BOM slower to update and edit.

And has Anyone written a tool that works like Solid edge Design Manager. But for Solid works.

I just did some checking, because it’s not a workflow I use often (or ever), but I think this will help with adding the new properties to the legacy Parts.

1. Open an Assembly (or start a new one) containing at least one Part with the new properties, along with one or more legacy Parts.
2. Insert a Bill of Materials in the Assembly.
3. If the BOM doesn’t already have one, add a column for the new property.
4. Double-click in an open cell in the row for one of the legacy Parts and the column for the new property. You will get the pop-up shown below.
5. Select “Keep Link.” You will probably want to click the “Don’t show again” box first.
6. Now you can add the desired value for the property.
7. When you next save the Assembly the new property will be added to the Part. In my test case it was added as a configuration property, but that shouldn’t be an issue.
