(Hello. Long time lurker, first time caller)

Unfortunately, thou it installs fine, SE 2025 CE just hangs on start, and finally exits with
“The environment application cannot be activated.” message.
I’ve tried removing a couple of recent Windows updates, but that didn’t help.
Not that I expected it to work, since SE 2024 CE works fine with, supposedly, most recent requirements such as WebView2 or vb.net.

I’ve looked at the crash log that SE2025 created, and I suspect lack of system information
is due to start being interrupted before system info is gathered?

Yes, it’s an old machine
And I suspect that’s (part of?) the problem.
Apart from this, there was also an issue with “Keyshot Studio” not being able to find the license, but that’s a story for another time.
Oh, well
Luckily, I made a backup of SE 2024 preferences before attempting the upgrade, so installing it again wasn’t a big deal.
I have some questions about using “settings and preferences wizard” ‘correctly’, but that’s another topic.

Apologies for the wall of text.

‘Mystery’ solved, I guess.

TL;DR
Solid Edge 2025 can’t start on systems where CPU is lacking AVX
instructions, and the issue might be fixed with a SE update.
So, I am looking forward to SE 2026 CE

There is a patch for SE 2025 that addresses this, but its for customers with
support contract/access to Support Center only.
But, even that is a temporary solution because

Please note that starting in Solid Edge 2026,
running Solid Edge on machines that do not support AVX instructions
will no longer be supported.

More details here

Guess I am ‘stuck’ with SE 2024 for now

Do you know if it’s a limitation imposed by Microsoft..?

@AlexLachance I think that’s unlikely. The AVX ‘issue’ is with the Solid Edge 2025
code that deals with point clouds.
I am guessing the patch swaps some files with non-AVX versions, but only as
a temporary workaround for SE 2025 lifetime, because QA didn’t catch that in time
so there could be proper warning in 2025 release notes.
Makes sense, TBH, AVX instruction set is pretty common on CPU’s used in
CAD workstations, presumably.

IIRC, it was introduced ~decade ago  , and it brings some pretty nice
performance improvements, potentially.
Point clouds are heavy to work with, so every bit helps.

Yay
(c/p from Siemens SE forum thread)

Since this was originally reported, we have been tracking the number of requests
we have received for the patch.
After a few months, it became rather obvious that I needed to go back
to the Development team and ask them to reevaluate the position
to require AVX Instruction set support for Solid Edge 2026.
After a few weeks of additional investigation,
the development team was able to resolve the dependency on AVX.
Therefore, AVX Instruction set support will not be required by Solid Edge 2026,
and processors that do not support AVX instruction sets will once again
run Solid Edge as they have in the past.
