We have a replicated archive server in a remote, sister company location. We are diverging and in a phase where they have a SNL (running on the replicated archive server for now) that those users should be using. It works find for Solidworks, but I’m beginning to get the feeling that we cannot use two different license servers for one PDM vault. It appears in the Administration tool that I can set the license server in the License node under the replicated archive to theirs, and under the original archive to our server. But then after a while it switches back.
Anyone have experience with PDM clients on an archive server pulling from a different SNL than the rest of the users?
To be clear, the reason for two servers is a phase in the diverging of the two, it’s not permanent. There’s too many things to time out perfectly so we’re in a gap. But we have 7 unused CAD Editor licenses on the other side while the other server is out of licenses most of the day.
Perhaps you need to take one step back. Can they deactivate their serial number on their license server and then add that serial number to your server for now. Then use the FlexLM options file to reserve licenses based on hostname, IP address, etc.
Probably, I think, maybe. Thing is we just deactivated that serial number from our SNL when we transferred the ownership to the sister company. So that is literally going backwards. If we put those CAD editor licenses back on our SNL I don’t think we would need to reserve anything, they’re all floating licenses.
But it sounds like you’re saying that users of one PDM Vault cannot use licenses from two SNLs, based on which archive server they’re connected to?
Per this KB article, the license info is stored in the SQL database. Since the replicated server shares the database (either directly or as a read only copy) with the main server, I don’t see a way to have separate license servers.
I have two license servers for our PDM, one for test and one for production, I usually switch between them, but I have never tried to add more than one server at time.
If the pdm administration allows it, the additional snl server could use the option file to link some users to a certain license with higher priority.
IIRC the database name is conisiomasterdb, which has just some table that handle licensing, and logged users list. it usually has one entry for the license server table.
That is what I was afraid of. Thank you for confirming it and KB article. I wish I would have thought to check on this this before we moved a group of PDM licenses to the sister company SNL.
