Painted surfaces in drawings

We are making steel components for painting which often cannot be fully coated, but only require paint on select surfaces.

Our supplier prefer to have the surfaces split into three categories:

  • Surfaces to be painted


  • Surfaces to be masked (no paint allowed)


  • Surfaces that don’t need to be painted, but where it doesn’t matter if any paint dust settles (supplier don’t want to mask more than necessary)

Does anyone have any examples of drawings for painted components with some masked areas, preferably something that also work in black/white?

Are there any standards or best practices for this, such as a specific surface pattern or similar?

I’ve not seen any specific pattern for painting/coating. We just use to show the surface and mark a note pointing to that surface. The note could say “Surface to be painted/coated”.

We use to give general instructions on surface treatment etc in text box.

But now that is said, I have been working on a surface treatment instruction (read: painting instruction :confused: ) as a set of pictures of components and details in our units that must not get coated. During the process I havee also been thinking of conveying painting instructions in our drawings since some of the components are painted by the subcontractors.

Oh… and sometimes we use thick dashed line close by to the surface that is different from the general instruction text.

You could try using different hatching to show the different areas.

I’ll cut the mask area 0.0001" deep. So it’ll show in drawing with dimension.

I use a split line, so there is no change to the surface depth.

martin I’ll second SPerman method. Split the faces in the model and show them in a different color. In the drawing you can hatch the face.

Is there any way to export the splitted lines to DXF too?
At present we use Frederick_Law’s solution to be able to export them to DXF.

Only if tangent lines are shown in the view. You could select the face and “Convert Entities” then put it on whatever layer you want.
