New Feature Poll - Nested Replies

Looks like no…

Just you

Apparently, that’s the way it’s meant to be?

So, when I toggle it, it changes it for everyone, not just my view of it.

To me it’s kinda like UDP vs TCP in one way; in TCP every packet is relevant and important, in UDP it’s mostly just entertainment so doesn’t really matter if a bunch are missed. (I know that’s not exact definitions of TCP and UDP, the metaphor falls apart quickly). Point is Facebook has nested threads because it’s all irrelevant gibberish with no governance and nobody has lost anything valuable in life if they miss a reply, or even long branchy threads. In a technical forum there’s a discussion happening, real thinking, observations shared, logic applied. This is much different than Facepage. Instead of many people talking randomly in a big room, a forum is where there’s organization (hopefully) and there’s a productive discussion that stays on topic. IF another topic starts up that’s an offshoot of the original, then the moderator(s) can take those posts and MOVE them to a new thread.

Just my $0.02

Agree with this statement.

And that is about all it does. I just spent a couple of minutes scrolling up & down & switching between New, Top, & Old, and now I am really confused about who replied when. Though I can easily see what they replied to!

Wow. I tried to make a post where we could explore nested replies in conjunction with post up/down voting and it did not work at all. The topic showed nothing at all, so it seems they have some bugs to work out.

The voting appeared for a few minutes, and then disappeared.

I was turning it on and off for a few minutes. I’ve since found a Discourse bug report stating that post voting and nested replies are incompatible.

I’m not re-reading this whole thread, so forgive me if this has been stated! The reply to sperman and frederick is at the bottom like i like it, but i also just noticed it’s in a collapsible button. I like this too! can we keep it like this? it’s like the best of both worlds.

it hasnt always been like that, has it? i’m gonna feel super retarded if it has been…

Discourse discussions are traditionally flat, but it introduces this button when:

  • The reply is not the very next post: If someone replies directly to a post, but other posts get published in between, the button appears.
  • There are multiple replies: If a single post gets two or more direct, linked replies.
  • Quoted replies are grouped: The system links partial or full quoted replies to the original message.

however it works, this is super useful and now that i know about it my qol has greatly improved!

Is that default behavior or have you added a Theme/Customization to enable those. I too like those very much. They feel like a good compromise where both flat and threaded can be accomplished.

It is the default. There are 3 settings that affect its behavior:

There is also a setting where when you click the ‘X Replies’ button, the view zooms in to show just the post and it’s replies. I can turn that on if we want to see what it is like.
