I’m hoping one of you has some experience with a management training course that is worth a darn. More specifically, a management training course designed for engineers, with limited interpersonal skills, hatred of conflict, and maybe a little insecurity as the underlying foundation.
At my previous job, I went through two different courses, neither of which were very effective for me. The first course was Management by Strengths, which was pretty good, but was focused on fine tuning your interactions with the other person based on their personality. It assumed you already had good management skills that needed to be refined. (Kind of like trying to tell someone how to heel-toe, when they’ve never driven a car.)
The other class was 3 days of “Emotional Intelligence.” When that was all said and done, we had all heard a bunch of buzzwords, but learned absolutely nothing. I think they actually cut the last day short because the more we asked questions, the more word salad the answers became. I still think that term is complete bullsht; and negatively judge anyone who uses it.
So in summary, a managerial course aimed at people who have no business managing people, but have been put in that role.
If you find anything let me know but as far as it goes for me, personnal experience has been the driving factor. I love psychology and have a knack for seeing subtilities in body language. The more people I interact with, the more I learn everyday about managing insecurities, learning to listen to other’s concerns and insecurities when they do bring them up and mostly, not interrupt the person trying to explain whatever it is.
I had a few courses that helped me fine-tune certain things like priority management but everything else has been a “You learn as you grow”
