Cloud services - especially storage. Anyone using it?

Title says it all mostly. Good/bad experiences? Particularly performance. I’m sure a lot of it is network connection-based. I saw somewhere that it’s supposed to work like PDM in that it caches files on your local desktop. But say I want to jump in and help out with something another designer is working on. Do I have an hour wait ahead of me while the large machine assembly and all its components cache on my computer?

We have a meeting/demo/something with our VAR tomorrow where they’re trying to explain the benefits of cloud services…

Longtime PDM user from Workgroup days to Standard here. Had to use 3Dx for a freelance project a couple of years ago, for an ~18month project, basic take-homes:

  • initial setup was seriously clunky; setting up part/drg templates & sheet formats and getting them talking reliably to the cloud was a serious feat and not reliable
  • basic check/in check out functionality worked ok-ish if everything went smoothly and you’re checking in small(ish) assemblies.
  • frequently had crashes mid-checkin on larger assemblies (still only ~100 components), unpicking what had been checked in and referenced other files was a detective nightmare
  • sometimes the cloud system would go down and prohibit any checkins; at this point the VAR was powerless and relied on SW to sort it (days not hours)
  • Didn’t really feel like it was integrated into SW properly, dealing with configurations (CAD families!) was wild
  • Interface felt like it was designed by a GCSE graphics student in an afternoon
  • help documentation was very poor quality or non-existent

This was for a small-ish co where there were 10s of users actively using it, and only a handful of users regularly checking in/out data, so didn’t really get much support from the VAR or SW. I’m sure if you’re a massive co. with 2000 seats, you’ll have more responsive tech support on hand, but for another project of this scale, you’d have to drag me over hot coals to use it again.
