I may be the only one that thinks this way, but I have many times thought that some of the stuff in signatures should be a snapshot in the post rather than updated. Example would be what version are you using? When I read a thread that is several years old and the topic becomes related to a specific issue and some peoples signatures have been updated to show what they are using now it gets a bit confusing, at least, it negates the usefulness of that data in the signature.
I like that Matt added extra properties for the user that show what system he/she is currently using. I have just thought from time to time that it would be neat if a portion of the signature would not update once the post is posted.
Yeah, that’s a good idea. You’d have to get the signature data into the post field somehow. I don’t think that’s a built-in feature of phpbb, but I can keep my eye out for an extension that might help with that. Thanks for the idea.
Yeah, that would save some space, but it would take a bit of messing around in the code. Right now I’m going for the low-hanging fruit - stuff that gets us good functionality for not much effort. Remember you can turn off signatures altogether in the user control panel. That way everybody else can see them, but you don’t. Easy way to get what you want without coding or upsetting others.
I see that some of the user info is in the right column under the user; location, etc. I think if people use the place in profile properties for their workstation and CAD specifics and that shows up under the user avatar in the right column it would negate the need for it in a signature. Just a thought.
