Can change Colour of Face but Not Feature?

How come I am able to change the appearance of a face, but if i try to do the feature (in this case a move face across several faces of two bodies) it will not show it? Using SW 2024

well it works with c’ut extrude and a couple other fea’tures that ive tried. perhaps m’ove face is not a good candidate for feature colouring… waste of an hour.

So, there a closed bug report describing this:

I find the explanation for closing it to be less than convincing:

The appearence color setting should not be run during the move face feature because the features is being modified.
Correct Use: Set colors when not in another command modifying the features (before or after the move face command in this case)

What really bothers me is that the color is actually applied to the move face feature, it’s just not shown:

Then why does it change my body name from cut extrude 55 to move face  seems to me if its modifying the feature, the OG name should stay the same.

the color in the tree really had me going for a while. Because i saw the colour there, i spent a good 20 minutes trying a whole grab-bag of tricks to get it to show up, only to find this out…

I think the feature color thing only affects faces that are created by the feature. So like if you cut a hole through a flat face, it only colors the cylindrical face rather than the flat face, even though the flat face was “modified” by cutting a hole through it. I don’t care enough right now to do a bunch of testing to fully verify…

In this specific instance, the first cut creates 3 new faces. I’ve colored the cut orange.

Next I added another thru cut using two new rectangles. One of the rectangles shares edges with the existing cut. Therefore even though those faces did get modified by being extended on through, they stayed orange. The new faces created by the cut got the blue color.

Thanks for the visual explanation. That puts the official solidworks explanation in a new light, and now that fixes the short circut in my noggin. Seeing this- this will stick with me now. Thanks!

I would definitely say that the official wording leaves much to be desired… Understanding how it works before reading the text, the wording does look accurate. But it’s not a good explanation if you don’t already know!
