BLOG: How Long will your Desktop Solidworks Last?

“There’s always some relevant Star Trek analogy, isn’t there?”

Interesting Blog. Personally, I don’t think you can plan that much if you are dead against cloud computing. Any company could change on a flip of coin, and what you thought was was a plan is gone.

At some point I have a feeling the Soildworks 3D experience will get a lot better - you can hope that would happen before the computer version is gone.

On a side note, it is expected that companies investment moving to the cloud is likely to drop over the next few years while we are in this economic chaos. Companies looking at tightening belts are beginning to see instead of saving money, it actually in many cases, costs more even with the internal IT overhead. Maybe that might drive down the cost of cloud services or prolong the life of things like the Solidworks perpetual license.

Like ST Discovery, SW Desktop will last forever in another universe ~~~~

Distaste for a company doesn’t have to be just based on the cloud. It could also be based on their product development record and how they handle change. Do you really want to sign up for more SWYM? Is the direction of 3dxWorld benefitting you in any way? Does the plan of changing products by killing them off and starting again with something incompatible really the best plan for customers?

ps, I usually don’t post my blog stuff here. I figure if you all want to read it, you know where it is. But thanks to KennyG for the link!

Exactly. That poor excuse for a forum is just one indication of how the company handles things. It doesn’t make me feel real good about how they handle other aspects of the business.

I’ve got one, 3DXP is like the Star Trek Enterprise TV show…

Though they’ve made some more attempts recently at series that may be worse. That’s the one that sticks out in my memory.

Yeap, kill everyone in ep 1. Then move the rest to another universe.

Thing is, I’ve heard decent things about the PLM portion of their “platform”. The problem is they decided to reinvent the wheel and shoehorn the forums into it. That’s like driving wood screws with a hammer.

If you’d just tag everything properly, you wouldn’t have any problems…

I don’t know about you, but I cut the tags off everything I own. Tags are for toes :smiling_imp:

You might want to delete that. You don’t want the mattress tag police to come looking for you.

That’s where I see this going for many users. They know that at many customers the CAD bill is high enough that the corner offices make that choice. So they market that the CAD system is all in the same platform as the PLM, ERP and other management and planning systems then it’s likely the exec management will lean towards using the CAD offered by this existing vendor and their platform. After all its seamlessly integrated. That’s the bigger customers. The little customers like the smaller bite size subscription costs that the cloud systems offer and typically are much more flexible without as much legacy data to remodel.
