Workstations, what do you use?

Okay now I’m jealous

Me too! Our designers get these. Mine isn’t quite as elaborate.

Lenovo ThinkPad
Intel i7-9850H @ 2.6
32 GB Ram
Samsung 500GB SSD
Nvidia Quadro RTX 3000 - 6 GB GDDR6

My workstation(designers) is this:

Lenovo ThinkStation P340
Intel Xeon W-1290P @ 3.7GHz
32GB Ram
1TO SSD + 2TO HDDrive
Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 - 8GB DDR6

Engineers get this:
Intel core i7-12700 @ 4.9 GHz
128GB DDR5
1TO SSD PCI Express with TCG Opal encryption
Nvidia RTXA4000 - 16GB DDR6

We have all this power, and then along comes Solidworks with a new service pack and nothing works again. LMAO. o[

I currently use a Gigabyte laptop with an AMD Ryzen 7 chip and Nvidia RTX 3060 laptop GPU. Running 64 GB RAM.

Middle of 1st semester in my AAS program, had to upgrade from the lower range gaming laptop I had as ports were getting some corrosion in them and the build quality was not that good to be sinking money into it. It is an i5 with 16 GB memory and a mid tier AMD laptop graphics card.

Also have a Brother laser printer because f*ck HP ink jets. What HP does should be criminal with their ink scams.

All laptops are still being used, though.

  • Big laptop is hooked up to a large UHD monitor. MAN, THIS HAS BEEN A GAME CHANGER! I can not stress enough if you are doing serious drawings how awesome it is not to have to squint!

  • Big laptop screen itself is usually on the recorded lectures from my CAD professor.

  • Old laptop is a document computer is where I pull up the pdfs of the assignments so I can see what some obscure angle is on something without having to tab out, losing train of thought.

One awesome side effect as well as a negative side effect of a CAD workstation is it SCREAMS with modern games. Too much so. I sometimes have to force myself to get off and do some work!

Since I got my designer job, I’d love to show off my upgraded WFH battestation.

The two monitors and laptop were provided to me by the company. Company deals with a lot of confidential technical information, so it’s on lockdown. It’s not as powerful as my personal laptop, but still is not a slouch.

I also replaced the 1980s era teacher’s school desk I dumpster dived. I was going to be hardcore and do wood working and fix it. But looking at the cheap 80s era particle board construction of some parts and tools I would need when I really just needed space, was not worth it.

My back up laptop (the one I had at beginning of college - a low tier 3-4 year old i5 gaming rig) has been semi-retired. I will use it if I need to travel somewhere and don’t feel like disconnecting a bunch of wires. Until such time it’s time to upgrade main personal computer in a couple of years, then current laptop will take that spot.

That’s a nice setup mate, would need a bit more lighting for me though, it’s a bit dark.

The gamer in me like the bling. LOL!

But yeah, I do have overhead lights.

Right now it’s in the living room. I do have a spare bedroom, but it’s a studio for my wife who does arts and crafts.

I plan probably in a year to move to a bigger place. But, my place is cheap, cheap. My rent is like 600 USD a month for a two bedroom (I live in the 'hood in Baton Rouge with a ornery large dog and wife). There’s also a non-zero possibility of transfers, jobs not working out, calamities, etc and I kind of want to pay off the 10K or so in loans plus be a little more secure before I start looking at mortgages or renting more expensive places. Only to find out I need to move or something.

Keep the security mate, especially with a nice price like that, not everyone allows renters to have domestical animals.
