Windows 11 24H2 Explorer(?): missing PDM blueberry icon from tray, get latest at login sporadically fails

We are used with PDM breaking down, but this time is probably MS messing with explorer and windows processes startup. The PDM blueberry icon is completely missing from the tray.

We also noticed that “get latest” is sometimes skipped on the folders it should run automatically during PDM logins. SW PDM 2023 SP5 and Clients running Windows 11 24H2

Workaround:

  1. from task manager kill edmserver.exe and explorer.exe on the client
  2. reload explorer.exe
  3. reload edmserver.exe from %Program Files%\Solidworks Corp\PDM\

the blueberry icon loads fine in the system tray.

According to KB below and the official workaround, we should not required to manually load edmserver.exe, but in our case it will fail to restore the blueberry icon. The major annoyance is get latest at login fails too in “some” cases, irregular patter as usual so it is difficult to say if related to this issue or not.

Description

Issue is tested & reproduced with PDM version - 2023 SP5, 2024 SP5, 2025 SP2
Windows 11 23H2

SQL 2019 CU 22

This issue is time-specific and occurs when the EdmServer.exe process loads before the Windows 11 taskbar, either during system startup or when the explorer.exe process is restarted from Task Manager. Since this behavior depends on the timing between taskbar and EdmServer.exe initialization, it is not consistently reproducible across all Windows 11 systems.

Steps to reproduce BR -

  1. Create a default vault or use existing created.
  2. Restart the system and attempt to log in to existing PDM vault.
  3. Observe the task manager - EdmServer.exe process is running, but the blueberry (PDM) icon does not appear in system tray.

Alternatively, to reproduce using task manager -

  1. Create a shortcut to the PDM vault on your desktop (copy and paste the vault as a shortcut)
  2. Open the task manager>>details & end the ‘EdmServer.exe’ task & restart the ‘Explorer.exe’.
  3. While Explorer.exe is reloading, try to login inside a vault. Observe in Task Manager>>Details - that although EdmServer.exe is running, the blueberry (PDM) icon still does not appear in the system tray.

As a workaround, If the blueberry icon is missing from the system tray, open the Task Manager>>Details, end the ‘EdmServer.exe’ process & restart the ‘explorer.exe’ process, wait for few seconds, and then attempt to log in to the PDM vault again.
