I live in a somewhat rural area, and as a result, I lose power every year or two due to a storm. As a result, every year or two I cuss my generator because it needs a new carburetor due to all the corn they put in fuel these days.

I decided the solution was to put a diesel engine on the generator. How hard could it be? 🙂

Well, it turned out to be a little more complicated than anticipated. One bell of the generator was also the crank case for the engine. The generator also has a tapered input, while the engine has a straight output shaft.

I used this project as an excuse to purchase a Revopoint MetroY 3D scanner. I have to say, I’m very pleased with the results, especially considering how little time I’ve invested in learning how to use it. I’m sure with more time I would be even more impressed with what it can do. It was way more than adequate to determine the bolt pattern to build a plate to joint the generator to the engine.

The last time I used a romer arm with a laser was a decade ago, and although it didn’t require adding dots all over the place, this $1500 unit is comparable to what that +$100k setup was capable of. (Having said that, the modern Faro arms we use at work scan at an incredibly fast pace, orders of magnitude faster than this toy.)

Before purchasing this unit, I purchased a Creality scanner and was massively disappointed. Apparently a windows update broke their firmware over a year ago, and they do not have a fix. I was never able to get the firmware to recognize the scanner, even though it showed up in device manager just fine. (Sorry Fred, I know you are a creality fan boy.)

The scans kept losing their reference before I added the markers. Supposedly there was a firmware released last week that is supposed to improve that, but I don’t have anything I need to scan right now to test it.
